Pie-eyed ca. 1943

Pencil drawing of me by my sister Emmalu

Mother was driving back to our home in Olustee, Oklahoma, from the larger town of Altus. My sister Carolyn and I were in the back seat.  I had my head out the window on the driver’s side, facing oncoming traffic.  Mother told me to get my head back into the car. I did.  Soon it was back out again, several times, until a cattle truck passed.  A cow shat at the exact time for it to hit me square in the face: “bullseye!”

Mother stopped the car — not to clean up my face — but to laugh!  She willed this—another example of how she spoke directly with the Almighty.
